15 Doctoral (PhD) Positions in the Doctoral College Computational Sustainability

We are pleased to announce 15 open PhD positions within the framework of the Doctoral College Computational Sustainability, funded by the BMFWF.

The Doctoral College Computational Sustainability is a collaboration between TU Wien and JKU Linz, offering 15 interdisciplinary research projects in areas such as:

  • Sustainable Computing
  • Computing for Sustainable Material Science
  • (Hybrid) Quantum Systems
  • Behavioural Change Management for Sustainable Computing

Each project will be supervised by at least two professors from the relevant disciplines and institutions, ensuring a strong interdisciplinary foundation.

The goal of the Doctoral College is to train outstanding young researchers who will develop innovative solutions in the emerging field of computational sustainability.

Tasks:

  • Deepen scientific knowledge and independent research work on the specific project
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences and other scientific events
  • Successful completion of important milestones
  • Participation in scientific events and other outreach activities organized by TU Wien and JKU Linz
  • Writing a dissertation and publications
  • Participation in organizational and administrative tasks of the doctoral college
  • Teaching tasks (exercises and exams), student guidance
  • Assistance with thesis supervision
  • Participation in scientific events

Your Profile:

  • A diploma or master university degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, data science, material science, physics or a related discipline – depending on the research project(s) you are applying for- , and completed latest 5th December 2025.
  • Experience in relevant research fields of the selected project(s) are of advantage
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English
  • Knowledge of German (level B2) or willingness to learn it
  • Active participation in scientific collaborations
  • Team competences and problem-solving skills
  • Positive attitude and contribution to the work environment
  • Striving for continuous personal development

TU Wien:

The ten positions at TU Wien, see reseach projects with a Hosting Institution at TU Wien, start on March 1st 2026 and run for four (4) years. Each position is equivalent to a part-time university assistantship (30 hours/week).

Applications should be submitted online in English via the TU Wien job portal. Please provide:

  • A cover letter providing a list of three preferred topics from the list of research projects (please rank and give motivation for your choices)
  • A curriculum vitae including publications, conference contributions, and other scientific activities (if applicable), following the Europass template
  • A one-page summary of the diploma/master thesis
  • Transcripts of records of the Bachelor- and Master-studies
  • Two letters of reference (e.g., by your MSc thesis advisor)

Deadline for applications is 5th Dec. 2025.

Note: At the time of the application deadline, the candidate must not have been employed as a doctoral candidate at TU Wien for more than 12 months.

After the initial screening process, selected applicants will be invited by 19th Dec to give a brief presentation (either in person or online) of their previous research. Additionally, the selected candidates will have to give a presentation on an article relevant to their selected research project. The article will be sent to the selected candidates one week prior to the hearings. Hearings will be held January 12th and 13th 2026.
